Nexigen ernennt Dr. Jörg Vollmer als neuen CEO

Cologne, 14 October 2011. Nexigen GmbH, a biopharmaceutical company developing therapeutic peptides to fight cancer, announced the appointment of Dr. Jörg Vollmer as CEO and member of the management board of the company. Dr. Vollmer is the former CEO of Coley Pharmaceutical GmbH, a subsidiary of Pfizer Inc., and brings in experiences from both biotech and pharma. The acquisition of Dr. Vollmer will strongly support the current growth phase of the company to become a leading drug developer for innovative therapeutics in cancer.

Nexigen GmbH is in the process to extend its activities from drug discovery towards drug development. In order to support the rapid growth the company appointed Dr. Jörg Vollmer as CEO and member of the management board.
Dr. Vollmer was formerly Managing Director of Coley Pharmaceutical GmbH, a subsidiary of Pfizer Inc. Between 2008 and 2011 Coley Pharmaceutical did belong to the Pfizer Research. Therefore he brings in management skills from both the biotech and pharma world. As part of Pfizer’s Oligonucleotide Therapeutics Unit (OTU) he concentrated on the development of nucleic acid therapeutics to suppress disease genes such as siRNA and antisense. This field perfectly matches Nexigen’s positioning as a developer of innovative drugs targeting so far inaccessible disease mechanisms.
Before 2008 Dr. Vollmer held several senior management positions at Coley Pharmaceutical Group, latest as Vice President Discovery & Development. In this role he was responsible for the identification and evaluation of novel product candidates and new research and application areas. Coley Pharmaceutical was a pioneer in developing a class of drug candidates called TLR Therapeutics, oligonucleotide drugs to modulate the immune system. Dr. Vollmer holds a degree in Biology from the University of Freiburg and has a PhD in Immunology from the Max-Planck-Institute of Immunobiology.
Dr. Vollmer is Member of the Board of the biotechnology cooperation BioRiver e.V. in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Nexigen gewinnt MIG als neuen Investor für die Entwicklung neuartiger Krebstherapeutika

Die Nexigen GmbH, ein biopharmazeutisches Unternehmen, hat unter Beteiligung neuer und bestehender Investoren eine Finanzierungsrunde in Höhe von 4,1 Mio. € abgeschlossen. Das frische Kapital versetzt Nexigen in die Lage, bis 2013 strategische Ziele in der Entwicklung neuartiger Wirkstoffe gegen Krebs zu erreichen:

Präklinische Wirksamkeit der Wirkstoffkandidaten
Erweiterung der Wirkstoffpipeline
Weiterentwicklung der Technologie-Plattform für die pharmakologische Optimierung therapeutischer Peptide

Die Wirkstoffkandidaten resultieren aus Nexigens Technologieplattform, die Zugriff auf bisher unzugängliche Wirkmechanismen erlaubt. Damit wird die Entwicklung von Wirkstoffen mit neuen, möglicherweise überlegenen Eigenschaften und damit verbundenen wichtigen Alleinstellungsmerkmalen möglich.

An der aktuellen Finanzierungsrunde haben sich neben der AT Newtec GmbH erstmals auch die MIG Fonds beteiligt. Die Mittel dieser Finanzierungsrunde sollen für die Weiterentwick- lung von Nexigens Leitprodukt in der Onkologie verwendet werden. Ziel ist die Demonstra- tion der Wirksamkeit in geeigneten präklinischen Modellen. Darüber hinaus wird ein weiteres Projekt im Bereich der Krebsforschung weiter entwickelt, das Anfang 2011 gestartet wurde. Nexigens Technologieplattform beinhaltet Screening-Systeme in lebenden Zellen. Diese Systeme erlauben in einzigartiger Weise, Vorstufen von Wirkstoffen unter natürlichen Bedingungen zu selektieren und erreichen dadurch eine hohe Trefferrate bei der Identifizierung relevanter Moleküle. Daraus ergeben sich signifikante Einsparungen an Zeit und Aufwand bei der weiteren Entwicklung. Weitere Komponenten der Technologieplattform erlauben die effiziente Optimierung der identifizierten Wirkstoffvorstufen. Nexigen entwickelt damit eine neue Klasse von zellgängigen Peptidtherapeutika zur Beeinflussung von Krankheitsmechanismen, die für gängige niedermolekulare Wirkstoffe und Antikörper nicht erreichbar sind.

Nexigen präsentiert auf der TIDES Konferenz (22.-25. Mai, 2011; Boston, MA, USA)

Der Teil “Peptide Therapeutics” der diesjährigen TIDES Konferenz konzentriert sich auf Modulatoren von bisher nicht zugänglichen Targets und Krankheitsmechanismen. Eine neue Klasse von Wirkstoffen, zellpermeable Peptide, traten in letzter Zeit immer mehr in den Fokus von Biotech- und Pharmafirmen. Diese Peptidmodulatoren führen zu Wirkstoffen mit hohem USP, da sie Krankheitsmechanismen angreifen, die für traditionelle Wirkstoffentwicklung nicht zugänglich war. Hanjo Hennemann, CEO und CSO der Nexigen GmbH wird auf der 5. Assay and Drug Discovery Technologies Conference (San Diego, CA 20.-21. Sept. 2010) eine Präsentation über “Intracellular peptides: novel modulators for drug discovery and high content target validation”. Inhalt des Vortrags weden intrazelluläre Peptide zur modulation von nicht-enzymatischen Drug Targets sein. Intrazelluläre Peptide als Therapeutika geraten mehr und mehr in den Fokus als eine validierte Alternative zu siRNA-Therapeutika. Zusätzlich wird Herr Dr. Hennemann über innovative Peptide-Discovery Technologien und neue Anwendungen von intrazellulären Peptiden als wirkstoffähnliche Tools zur Targetvalidierung sprechen.

Nexigen präsentiert bei Next Generation Protein Therapeutics Summit (21.-23. Juni, 2010)

Nexigens CSO und CEO Dr. Hanjo Hennemann wird die Klasse der intrazellulären therapeutischen Peptide auf der Konferenz "Next Generation Protein Therapeutics Summit“ (21.-23. Juni 2010, San Diego, USA) präsentieren. Der Vortrag wird im Rahmen der neuen Konferenzformats "Crossing the Barriers" stattfinden, die aufgrund der wachsenden Bedeutung von intrazellulär aktiven Peptiden und anderen Biologics ins Leben gerufen wurde. Dr. Hennemann wird ebenso neuere Entwicklungen bei Nexigen vorstellen, mit besonderem Augenmerk auf der propriäteren Screening Plattform für intrazelluläre Peptide, die auf lebenden eukaryotischen Zellen basiert.

Investment round closed

Nexigen GmbH closed an investment round involving Santo Holding (Deutschland) and the biotech company 4SC AG. This investment will allow Nexigen to proceed its ongoing drug discovery programs (anti-infectives) and also extend its pipeline with drug discovery projects in oncology.

Nexigen GmbH and Phylogica Ltd. agree to co-market screening service

After the successful completion of trials over the past year, Nexigen GmbH and Phylogica Ltd. (Subiaco, Australia) signed a letter of intent for the worldwide co-marketing of the screening services offered by both companies. The trials included peptide screening with an undisclosed target using Nexigen's in vivo peptide screening platform and Phylogica's Phylomer® library. The trials confirmed the broad usability and high functional hit rate of the automated Nexi Peptide Screening platform in combination with highly diverse Phylomer® libraries.

Study successfully completed with Johnson & Johnson PRD

In October, 2007, Nexigen successfully completed a screening project with an undisclosed protein kinase, a drug target in oncology, with Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development.

Successfull cooperation with Bayer-Schering

In July 2007, we successfully finished a research cooperation with Bayer-Schering, Germany. The goal of this cooperation was the analysis of a cancer-relevant proteins (drug targets) using Nexigen's proprietary screening technology. The results provided Bayer-Schering with valuable information regarding the molecular function of this target and its role in disease.
